of smallpox, rooms have been lived in for their accommodation, there is no room to isolate the sick Constable. It would therefore be desirable, in cases where a man is probably sick with a contagious disease, that he should be immediately sent to Hospital; and as he could there have his clothes washed, and rations, the whole of the pay might be stopped, as is the practice in the Indian and Chinese forces, the deductions and stoppage of rations from Europeans continuing as at present.

Since the extension of the Police, several cases have occurred at the distant stations where Constables were necessarily removed into Victoria; and great inconvenience has arisen from not having a suitable place for their immediate reception.

The present force consists of 146 Europeans, 126 Indians and 22 Chinese, and upon average the sick of the preceding year, (presuming that the alterations specified above are adopted), the deductions will be as follows.

Europeans in Hospital.

Averaging 1 man for 13 weeks, and spell of 3 months, including the value of rations.

£347 16s 1d.

Europeans out of Hospital.

Full pay of 12 men for 3 months.

Indians in Hospital.

£15 19s 4d.

Sick stoppage for 4 Indian men, averaging 6 months.

£12 9d.

Deductions from Indians out of Hospital.

Amounting to £13 18s 6d.

£1 10s.
